A Green Tick For Our Sustainable Use Of Old Tyre Materials

Fulton Hogan Australia has recently been certified as a Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) Circular Economy Collaborator (Manufacturer).

This is a Federal Government Accredited certification which recognises Fulton Hogan for playing a role in utilising Australian generated tyre derived materials, contributing to a sustainable society.

The reality is that every year, millions of tyres reach their functional end-of-life in Australia. The majority of these end up in landfills. This means that finding innovative and sustainable ways of using old tyres is vital and crumb rubber asphalt roads are the perfect solution to a broader waste problem.

Over the past few years, Fulton Hogan has been working on the development of wet blended crumb rubber modified asphalt. As part of this development, Fulton Hogan demonstrated how crumb rubber modified asphalt could be produced with warm mix technologies, lowering production temperatures, VOC emissions, fuming and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

This work continues Fulton Hogan 30+ years of experience in producing crumb rubber modified binders for spray seals and crumb rubber asphalt mixes.

In 2021-22, 5,388 tonnes of crumb rubber asphalt was produced by Fulton Hogan Australia for customers. This helped to divert approximately 3,556 used tyres away from landfill. Examples of recent projects that have used crumb rubber modified asphalt products include McIntyre Road, Lara for the City of Greater Geelong and also Bentons Road, Moorooduc for Mornington Peninsula Shire.

This certification is great recognition of Fulton Hogan’s ongoing commitment towards using repurposed materials in its products, and how it will continue to strive towards creating a sustainable future.
