​It was golden glory for Fulton Hogan at the prestigious Canterbury Civil Contractors New Zealand (CCNZ) Awards, winning four major categories.

Christchurch’s Riccarton Road reconstruction team picked up both the project category and company image awards while the New Brighton Pier repair work won the innovation and health and safety categories.

Staff worked around the clock to reconstruct 500 metres of Riccarton Road in just four weeks. Challenges of heavy traffic, soft ground conditions and numerous utilities were overcome through careful organising of people and resources across both day and night shifts, hard work and strong contingency planning.

Judges commended the project team’s outstanding effort in working with local businesses to minimise construction disruption and develop an appropriate reconstruction plan.

“This project really did lift not only Fulton Hogan’s image, but the whole industry’s reputation that contractors can work within the community – with the community.”

The accolades didn’t stop there for Fulton Hogan with the New Brighton Pier project team recognised for its innovative thinking in repairing and strengthening the 17 pier pillars.

Working within the harsh conditions of the open sea, innovative thinking went into site access and safety, scaffolding works and repair methodology. Caissons, large watertight chambers, were installed around each pillar, creating a safe and dry environment for the sub-marine structural repairs.

The judges acknowledged that this innovative repair approach not only “provided a safe workplace for the contractor but safely enabled the consultant to inspect the damaged concrete.”
