Adelaide Airport soars to future-proof growth with Major Apron Expansion

Adelaide Airport has appointed Fulton Hogan as delivery partner for the Northern and Southern Apron Expansion project, a major infrastructure initiative that will increase aircraft parking capacity and support the terminal expansion and future growth at South Australia’s principal aviation gateway.

With demand for aircraft parking continuing to grow, Adelaide Airport’s existing apron infrastructure is approaching capacity. The expansion will deliver additional aircraft parking bays to the north and south of the terminal precinct, improving operational flexibility, supporting airline growth and enhancing the overall efficiency of airport operations.

Building on a more than 20-year relationship, Fulton Hogan will help deliver the next phase of the airport’s long-term development, creating new aircraft parking positions and ensuring the airport is well positioned to meet the needs of airlines, passengers and the South Australian economy for years to come.

The Northern and Southern Apron Expansion project will support increased aviation activity, improving aircraft turnaround capabilities and reinforcing Adelaide Airport’s role as a key transport and economic hub for South Australia directly connecting with an increased number of international destinations.

Adelaide Airport Executive General Manager for Planning, Development and Delivery, Kym Meys said Adelaide Airport continues to experience strong growth in passenger numbers and aviation activity, making investment in critical airside infrastructure essential.

“The Northern and Southern Apron Expansion project will increase aircraft parking capacity by 6 bays, improve operational efficiency and ensure Adelaide Airport can continue to deliver a high-quality experience for airlines and passengers. This investment forms a key part of Project Flight, our broader program to modernise and enhance airport infrastructure in line with future demand.”

Sustainability will be a key focus throughout the project, with opportunities being explored to recycle and reuse existing pavement materials as part of the apron expansion works. This approach aims to reduce waste, minimise the use of virgin materials and support Adelaide Airport’s broader sustainability objectives.

Fulton Hogan’s General Manager for Airports & Defence, Michael Thompson said we are proud to partner with Adelaide Airport on this important infrastructure project that will help meet growing aviation demand and support South Australia’s long-term economic growth.

“Our team has extensive experience delivering complex airfield infrastructure projects across Australia while maintaining live airport operations. Having partnered with Adelaide Airport across a number of airfield infrastructure projects for the last 20 years, we’re pleased to continue that relationship through this important expansion and help support the airport’s next phase of growth.”

Construction is expected to commence in late 2026, with the project being delivered in staged phases through to early 2028, helping minimise impacts on airport operations.
