Darlington Upgrade
The Darlington Upgrade, being delivered by Gateway Upgrade – a joint venture between Fulton Hogan and Laing O’Rourke – is another important stage in the delivery of Adelaide’s north-south corridor.
The project involves widening approximately 3.3kms of the existing Main South Road to create a non-stop motorway between the Southern Expressway and Tonsley Boulevard.
The project has seen many firsts, including the install of a 195 metre bridge built away from the site and moved into place using self-propelled modular transporters. This 3,600 tonne structure was the final, and largest, offsite manufactured bridge on the project and a first for Australia where a structure of this scale has been transported into position using self-propelled modular transporters. This solution kept Adelaide’s traffic flowing during construction and minimised the need to extensive road closures.
