Keeping Mackenzie Moving
The Mackenzie District’s vast and varied roading network is in safe hands, thanks to a dedicated team of contractors and local partners working under the Mackenzie District Council’s Transport Maintenance, Operation, Renewal and Improvement Contract.
Innovation and Local Knowledge Drive Success
Fulton Hogan, the principal contractor, has introduced a range of innovations to optimise maintenance and improve safety. Recent trials include:
- RoadRoid technology.
- Cat® GraderBits™.
- New “rotten rock” blended wearing courses.
These innovations have reduced the need for gravel carting and improved road durability. Local subcontractors play a key role, from bridge repairs to street cleaning, with a focus on upskilling and safety.
Community Engagement and Emergency Response
Communication is a priority, with the “Word on the Road” newsletter and regular updates via social media and stakeholder meetings. The team also leads the annual Winter Preparation Seminar, bringing together key agencies like NZTA, DOC, and MetService to plan for severe weather.
When emergencies strike, the response is swift. Real-time reporting tools ensure rapid identification and prioritisation of storm damage, while strong relationships with local subcontractors mean roads are reopened quickly and safely.
Environmental and Safety Leadership
Environmental stewardship is front and centre. Recent works at Nixons Road included ecological assessments to protect native fish species. The team is a founding member of ECan’s South Canterbury Gravel Extractors MOU Group.
Health and safety standards are high, with the South Canterbury branch holding Gold Standard accreditation and an impressive record of over 600 days without a lost-time injury.
Collaboration and Broader Outcomes
A spirit of collaboration underpins the contract, with joint reviews, shared office spaces, and ongoing secondments fostering a “one team” approach. The team supports local businesses, donates materials to schools, and sponsors high-achieving students.
Client and Community Praise
- “An absolutely fantastic job by Fulton Hogan and Shaw Civil yesterday – the grading of Stoneleigh and Monument Road is outstanding,” said one local resident.
- Council staff and stakeholders have echoed this sentiment, praising the team’s professionalism, responsiveness, and commitment to quality.
As the Mackenzie District continues to grow and face new challenges, the road maintenance team’s blend of innovation, local knowledge, and community focus is keeping the district connected and resilient.
