North Island Cable Enhancement 4 (NICE4)
At Fulton Hogan, our international infrastructure specialists are known for our collaborative approach. Our expert teams have a strong track record of working with other parties to achieve rail infrastructure and rail construction project outcomes on time – and on budget.
From 2011 Fulton Hogan partnered with John Holland in New Zealand to provide large-scale construction and maintenance services for KiwiRail, as well as other public and private clients working in and around the rail corridor.
The NICE4 project runs from Porewa to Te Awamutu along the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT) rail line, a length that spans 326 kilometres. The Works that JVRail is performing for the client KiwiRail includes the installation of pit and pipe along the entire route.
Different construction methodologies were used along the route including mole ploughing, trenching, directional drilling and the installation of above ground pipe work.
As the cable route is constructed, a optic fibre cable was installed in the duct which breaks into 55 locations along the route. This new fibre is the backbone cable to replace KiwiRails aging signalling equipment.
