Construction is currently underway on a new 2.6km realignment of State Highway One in Southland, bypassing the Edendale township and the Fonterra site. The alignment creates better highway connections between Invercargill and Gore and increases safety with heavy traffic diverted away from the local primary school and residential properties.

The current section of highway has three different speed limits, two rail crossings and a sharp 45km/h corner. It has become increasingly busy in recent years partly through tankers accessing Fonterra’s largest plant.

Located to the northwest of Edendale, the bypass will contain a four-way roundabout catering for highway traffic, a 2km northbound passing lane, a light vehicle/stock underpass servicing Fonterra farms and the installation of Southland’s largest box culvert for the Oteramika Stream.
