Coastal Pathway (Shag Rock to Esplanade)
Fulton Hogan is completing a 720 metre long shared pathway in Sumner, Christchurch, to construct new seaside access for cyclists, pedestrians and other path users.
The path is four metres wide and consists of a 120 metre long timber boardwalk and 600 metre long asphalt section, supported by a rock retaining wall. New GPS technology in diggers has resulted in more efficient and precise rock placement for the retaining wall construction, which is technically demanding and limited to low tidal periods.
The project is using about 30,000 tonnes of locally-sourced rock, including rock collected from Sumner Road following extensive damage in the 2010-11 Christchurch earthquakes.
The pathway section is part of the wider, community-driven Coastal Pathway scheme which plans to extend from Ferrymead to Sumner, to support safer commuting and seaside leisure for the public.
