Awakino Tunnel bypass
Fulton Hogan are constructing the Awakino Tunnel bypass on the SH3 between Taranaki and King Country. This project consists of 2.3km of new road to bypass the historic one-way tunnel. The project includes two new bridges, three MSE recon block retaining walls, and approximately 200,000m3 of earthworks.
The final product will include extensive riparian planting and approximately 15,000m2 of Kahikatea forest as well as a rest area and footpath back to the historic tunnel.
The project will help release restrictions on oversized loads from the north into the Taranaki region.
