Total surfacing solution

The Hunter Expressway is a 40km, four-lane freeway link between the Newcastle Link Road at the F3 Freeway and the New England Highway West of Branxton, in the Hunter Valley region of NSW. The AU$1.7b expressway was built to connect the communities of Newcastle and the Hunter region, as well as accommodate long-term development and growth in the regions in the future.

Fulton Hogan provided a total surfacing solution for the Hunter Expressway. Our vertically-integrated model meant we could provide both asphalt and spray seal, which was a major benefit to our client. Over the course of the project, Fulton Hogan placed more than 250,000 tonnes of asphalt and 1,000,000 litres of spray seal for the expressway.

Working efficiency

Thanks to our fleet of mobile plant and equipment, complete with skilled, well-trained teams, Fulton Hogan placed 13 layers of asphalt for the construction of the Buchanan Interchange and paving of six viaduct bridges. Time-frames were tight but Fulton Hogan teams worked in shifts over 24 hours each day to meet the client’s deadline and enable main line works to commence. Since the project’s completion, the Expressway has improved travel times for motorists between Newcastle and the Upper Hunter and the journey across the broader network.

By working on projects like this one, our Fulton Hogan team are proud – knowing we are delivering our mission to help create, care for and connect communities through delivery of quality infrastructure.
