12 August 2019 – The growing importance of water infrastructure has made a particular win in the Civil Contractors NZ Awards all the sweeter.
Fulton Hogan won the Hirepool Construction Excellence Award for Projects up to $5 million for the Wynyard Quarter Pump Station on behalf of Watercare. The client’s testimonial suggested they were quite happy, too.
“Fulton Hogan went above and beyond our expectations, particularly with their collaborative approach in delivering an innovative and technically challenging project involving several main stakeholders,” Watercare said.
“We definitely appreciated the ‘no surprises’ approach and that all challenges were addressed using a ‘best for project’ solution.”
The $4.5 million job involved two structures – a control building and wet well, with the storage tank built entirely underground. Complexities for the 14-metre deep wet well included a high water table, unknown beneath ground services, contamination from leached fuel from the ‘tank farm’ formerly on the site and the relatively complex architectural design by Chow Hill Architects.
The control building also doubles as a public toilet facility, as well as for housing rooftop sound and projection equipment for public events in the public park where it’s located.
In accepting the award, Fulton Hogan Civil South Regional Manager, Sean Walsh, highlighted the landmark nature of the building.
“When we build pump stations they can be pretty industrial …. it was great to build such an architectural structure and we’re pretty proud of it.”
