Building Connections With The Local Community In Fiji

The Fulton Hogan Hiways Joint Venture sponsored the recent Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Festival, which ran from 14 to 22 August 2015 in Suva.

During the week-long festival, the community gathered at Albert Park to enjoy an opening march, followed by food, rides, entertainment, sporting activities, singing and dancing competitions, children’s day, displays, careers village, arts village, and a procession of floats. This fun filled week celebrates the different cultures and the diversities that bind the vibrant city of Suva.

Each year the festival chooses a theme to raise awareness in the community, this year’s was Climate Change – Communities adapting from the Ridge to the Reef. The festival also raised money for the community, and since 2006 it has distributed over $FJD1 million to needy groups and organisations including children’s homes, large families in need, senior citizen’s homes, the Fiji Kidney Foundation, Fiji Cancer Society, National Heart Foundation, and others.

Fulton Hogan Hiways General Manager, Bill Caradus, says supporting the festival was a great way to help the community and raise the great work that Fulton Hogan Hiways Joint Venture does outside our direct responsibly of maintaining the local roads.

“Fulton Hogan Hiways is well on the way to being an established Fijian entity, and we are proud to support the community we live and work in. Our team pulled out all stumps to help make the festival successful and in a short time raised over $5000,” said Bill.

Fulton Hogan Hiways sponsored contestant Arishma Prasad in the Vodafone Fiji Hibiscus Queen competition. The team created a float for her to ride on in the parade through town which won the Best Float Award. Arishma, otherwise known as Miss Fulton Hogan Hiways, also won the Miss Personality Award.

“It was a huge team effort – not just by those involved in building the float – but by all our staff who turned up in droves with their families to represent the company. It was a heart-warming sight to see so many of our team members decked out in their day-glows proudly displaying the community spirit that we are promoting in our goal to build stronger communities here in Fiji.”
