Major Milestone Achieved At TEL With New Paengaroa Roundabout

FH12

A major milestone was achieved at the Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL), near the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, last month when the traffic was switched onto the new Paengaroa roundabout delivering immediate safety benefits to commuters in the region.

Fulton Hogan is working with HEB in a construction alliance to deliver this $455m Design & Construct contract on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency.

Replacing an existing high-risk intersection, the new roundabout is a welcome addition to the highway network. It is just one of the key features of the project that will provide a safer route, reducing travel time between Tauranga and Paengaroa, which will support this expanding region.

In a media release issued by the NZ Transport Agency, acting Bay of Plenty Highway Manager, Andrew Scott, said the agency was thrilled to be able to improve safety for drivers in the region by putting the new Paengaroa roundabout into use ahead of the TEL opening next year.

“Our contractors (Fulton Hogan HEB Construction Alliance) have done a great job getting the roundabout up and running. It has been a complex operation to get the traffic onto the roundabout and off the old piece of road, while still carrying out the works.”

Facts about the project:

  • 23km four lane median-divided highway
  • Over three million cubic metres of earthworks
  • Eight bridges
  • Approximately 550,000 square metres of new road
  • Approximately 300,000 native plants to be planted
