Melbourne’s iconic trams are one of the city’s major forms of public transport, with an estimated 180,000,000 passenger trips each year. The tram network’s reach, across more than 250 km of tracks across Melbourne’s inner-city and suburbs, makes it the world’s largest urban tram network.

Fulton Hogan prides itself on sustainable, quality infrastructure and by being involved with this project, we know we are assisting many thousands of Victorians and visitors to Melbourne access affordable, convenient transport for many years to come.

Infrastructure experts

Fulton Hogan’s expertise in rail infrastructure construction and maintenance was applied to the renewal of 920 metres of double tram tracks. We removed the existing tracks, which involved the excavation of over 6,000 tonnes of concrete and 245 tonnes of rail. The new track was then installed, including all new electrical conduits and pits, a crushed rock sub-base, installation of 2,600 tramway sleepers and 200 18m lengths of tram rail. Our team also installed two specially prefabricated rail junctions at the entrance to Essendon Tram Depot.

By combining our in-house asphalt supply and the ability to mobilise our maintenance teams quickly to assist with works with our vast civil experience in drainage, pavement construction and structural concrete and light rail experience, we brought a broad range of skills, expertise and knowledge to the Yarra Trams project.

Because of the high-traffic flow through the area, the work had to be completed within tight time-frames across various project stages. As experienced infrastructure professionals, we’re used to dealing with these types of issues and our Fulton Hogan team consistently demonstrates a consultative approach with key stakeholders and communities. The result is effective, efficient outcomes that help people stay connected.
