Fulton Hogan engineer wins top prize at Water NZ Conference

We’re proud to announce Fulton Hogan Technical Engineer, Matthew Woodfield, has won the Hynds Paper of the Year Award at this year’s Water NZ Conference, held in Christchurch.

Matthew wrote and presented his paper, titled Achieving Compliance – A Practical Approach for Very Small Supplies, providing valuable, practical insights to help small water supply operators meet regulatory requirements. The paper impressed the judging panel with its innovative solutions and relevance to New Zealand’s water challenges.

“Small water supplies often face real challenges when it comes to compliance, but with practical solutions we can make a genuine difference for those communities,” says Matthew.

“I’ve seen first-hand how important safe, accessible water is at our remote quarries, so I wanted to share approaches that work. I’m absolutely honoured to receive this recognition – it’s great to see the issue highlighted, and I’m proud to contribute to improving water standards in New Zealand.”

This achievement not only highlights Matthew’s expertise and leadership but also underlines Fulton Hogan’s reputation as a skilled and trusted water contractor.

“Matthew’s award is a testament to our team’s dedication to raising the bar in the water industry. His practical approach to compliance genuinely makes a difference for smaller communities, and we’re proud to have our expertise recognised at a national level,” says National Water Manager, Simon Drew.

General Manager Engineering Solutions, Bevan Sandison, says the award demonstrates Fulton Hogan’s capability and skill in the water sector. He is also thrilled that a young engineer within our National Water team, as part of the company’s Engineering Solutions business, has made his mark in a sector he enjoys.

“This recognition further reinforces our capability and track record in the water sector. Fulton Hogan’s expertise enables us to deliver practical, effective solutions for communities of all sizes, and Matthew’s achievement highlights our ongoing commitment to developing industry-leading talent,” he says.

Congratulations Matthew on this outstanding accomplishment and thanks Water NZ and Hynds for your ongoing support of innovation in the sector.
