Midland Port: Delivering a Modern Freight Gateway for Canterbury

The successful completion of the Midland Port Container Terminal in Rolleston stands as a milestone in Canterbury’s freight and logistics sector. Delivered for Lyttelton Port Company (LPC), this $30 million, 11-hectare greenfield development has created a strategically positioned hub, connecting shippers across the South Island to national and international markets.

Project Delivery
Completed between February 2015 and June 2016, the Midland Port project involved:

  • 120,000m³ of cut-to-fill earthworks and 40,000m³ of imported fill.
  • Widening and upgrading Jones Road, including a new KiwiRail embankment, rail crossing, and direct rail link to the port.
  • Construction of a stormwater retention and soakage basin, and extensive drainage infrastructure.
  • 63,000m² of heavy-duty pavements, paver-laid for programme efficiency, and finished with 17,000T of PortPhalt® for maximum durability.
  • Installation of 1,100m of water supply main, 2 foulwater pumpstations, and a 15,000L storage tank system.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Management
The project’s success was built on strong relationships with local stakeholders, utility providers, KiwiRail, and Selwyn District Council. Early and ongoing engagement ensured all requirements were met, and Jones Road was closed for six weeks to enable rapid, coordinated construction with minimal disruption.

Environmental and Safety Excellence
Environmental management was a key focus, with site-specific controls for water, dust, and sediment, and full compliance with ECan resource consents. The project achieved zero harm, with no lost time or medical incidents across the entire build.

Innovation and Value
Programme milestones were met despite weather challenges, thanks to innovative construction methods and daily coordination between multiple specialist crews. The use of PortPhalt® and paver-laid basecourse delivered a robust, long-lasting pavement solution tailored to the demands of container operations.

A Collaborative Success
Fulton Hogan thanks Lyttelton Port Company, KiwiRail, Selwyn District Council, utility partners, and the Rolleston community for their support and collaboration. Midland Port stands as a testament to what can be achieved through partnership, innovation, and a commitment to quality
