Fulton Hogan Delivers Major Reclamation Project for Lyttelton Port Company
Client: Lyttelton Port Company (LPC).
Duration: July 2021 – Late 2024
Scope of Works:
Fulton Hogan has successfully completed the multi-stage reclamation development for Lyttelton Port Company (LPC), transforming six hectares of land into a state-of-the-art container terminal and supporting infrastructure. The project, which began in July 2021, was delivered in a live operational port environment and required careful planning, innovation, and collaboration to meet LPC’s growing needs.
Project Highlights
• Construction of 70,000m² of heavy-duty pavement, including advanced asphalt and stabilised fill solutions
• Installation of new ring road, stormwater systems, watermain, wastewater, and ocean outfall infrastructure
• Foundations for refrigerated container towers and amenities to support port operations
• Delivery of the project in multiple stages, allowing operational handover and minimising disruption to port activities
Innovation and Collaboration
Working closely with LPC, Fulton Hogan introduced several engineering innovations, including:
• Custom design and build pavement solutions tailored to the port’s unique geotechnical requirements
• Development of marine methodologies for stormwater outfall construction, with works completed below sea level and in reclaimed land
• Onsite CTB pugmill establishment to improve material quality and workability
• Use of machine control technology for precise pavement laying
Throughout the project, Fulton Hogan maintained a strong focus on health and safety, environmental outcomes, and stakeholder engagement. The team’s collaborative approach ensured that all works were completed to the highest standards, with regular communication and planning alongside LPC’s project and operational teams.
Stakeholder Feedback
The project has been recognised for its excellence in delivery and innovation. Alistair Boyce, LPC Head of Engineering and Projects, praised Fulton Hogan’s professionalism and collaborative spirit, noting the team’s ability to deliver on time, to high quality standards, and with minimal impact on port operations.
Lasting Impact
The successful completion of the LPC Reclamation Development marks a significant milestone for both Fulton Hogan and LPC, providing critical infrastructure to support the port’s future growth and operational efficiency. The project stands as a testament to Fulton Hogan’s expertise in delivering complex civil works in challenging environments, with a commitment to safety, sustainability, and client satisfaction.
