Fulton Hogan Delivers Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 Ahead of Schedule
Fulton Hogan successfully completed the Christchurch Southern Motorway Stage 1 (CSM1), a transformative infrastructure project spanning 10.5 kilometres and connecting SH73 (Brougham Street Expressway) to SH1 (Main South Road). Delivered six months ahead of schedule, the project enhances connectivity across Christchurch and sets a benchmark for large-scale motorway construction in New Zealand.
Comprehensive Scope Across Three Zones
CSM1 was divided into three distinct zones, each with its own set of challenges and achievements:
- Zone A: Upgrade of Halswell Junction Road, Springs Road roundabout, and installation of traffic signals at Shands Road. Included 2.5 km of roadworks and utility upgrades.
- Zone B: Construction of a new four-lane median-separated motorway (5 km) with underpasses and realigned local roads.
- Zone C: Upgrade of 3 km of motorway between Collins Street and Curletts Road interchange, maintaining access to A&P Showgrounds and Canterbury Sale Yards.
- Additional works included 230m of PE250 watermain installation under Curletts Road and over 175,000 m² of pavement construction.
Performance and Achievements
- Delivered six months ahead of schedule and within budget.
- Zero Harm achieved across all zones; no LTI or MTI incidents.
- Environmental excellence with daily, weekly, and monthly audits in collaboration with Environment Canterbury (ECan).
- 98% quality KPI achieved across all works.
- Extensive stakeholder engagement and proactive communication.
- Use of recycled materials (RCC, asphalt tailings) for subbase and embankments.
- Awarded Health & Safety Award by Canterbury NZCF.
Sustainability and Innovation
Fulton Hogan implemented sustainable practices throughout the project, including the use of recycled crushed concrete (RCC) and asphalt waste in embankments. These initiatives reduced the need for virgin materials and minimised carbon emissions from cartage.
Innovative construction methodologies and stakeholder-focused planning ensured minimal disruption to residents and businesses, reinforcing Fulton Hogan’s reputation for excellence in infrastructure delivery.
