Fulton Hogan Completes Wastewater Renewal Project Ahead of Schedule in Linwood
Fulton Hogan has successfully delivered Christchurch City Council’s Wastewater Renewals Linwood project in 2022, completing critical infrastructure upgrades across seven streets in Linwood ahead of schedule and within budget.
The $5.6 million project, which ran from March 2023 to January 2024, involved the renewal of over 2.1 kilometres of wastewater mains and laterals across Raglan, Dearsley, Trent, Gloucester, Worcester, Hereford, and Nursery Roads. With trench depths reaching up to 4 metres and groundwater challenges requiring full-time dewatering, the project showcased Fulton Hogan’s technical expertise and commitment to safety.
Efficient Delivery and Stakeholder Engagement.
Despite the complexity of the works, Fulton Hogan completed the project 10 days early by deploying additional drainage crews and managing up to four work fronts simultaneously. A dedicated stakeholder management plan ensured minimal disruption to residents and businesses, with tailored solutions such as nightshift works on Dearsley Street to accommodate commercial access needs.
The team also maintained access to key cycle routes and received positive feedback from NZTA for its traffic management approach.
Environmental and Quality Excellence.
Environmental compliance was a cornerstone of the project, with continuous monitoring of dewatering operations and sediment levels. Archaeological protocols were followed due to the historical nature of the area, and all work was completed under CCC’s consent conditions.
Quality assurance was rigorously managed through Fulton Hogan’s GIS system and QA Master Register, with all documentation and as-builts handed over within agreed timeframes. Only two minor surfacing defects were noted at handover, both closed out well within the defects liability period.
Sustainability and Workforce Development.
Fulton Hogan’s commitment to sustainability was evident through the use of recycled asphalt product (RAP), local quarry sourcing, and reduced cartage emissions. The project also supported workforce development, involving a graduate engineer and a cadet in the drainage crew, both gaining valuable hands-on experience.
Subcontractor Martin Civil Construction completed 22% of the works, contributing to the successful delivery of the project under Fulton Hogan’s national pre-qualification standards.
