Further Major Win For SH6 Project

2 August 2023:

Shortly after winning a 2023 National IPWEA (Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia) Excellence in Asset Management Award, Fulton Hogan’s SH6 rebuild project has won another major national award.

The Tasman Journeys and Marlborough NOC team has won Engineering NZ’s ENVI Project Innovation Award for achieving, in a seven-week road closure, what would have taken many times longer with a traditional, linear tender-design-build approach. Shown after receiving the award is Tasman Journeys NOC Contract Manager, Nick Webby; General Manager Engineering Solutions, Bevan Sandison and NOC Renewals Manager, Mario Lunjevich.

In his acceptance speech, Nick Webby paid tribute to Waka Kotahi for entrusting Fulton Hogan with such a complex project in such a short time line, WSP for managing the 24-hour-a-day design operation, the various other Fulton Hogan regions who were involved, and the many subcontractors.

“This is the sort of project that pushes the boundaries of what people may have thought possible, and it is something we will remember for a long time,” Nick says.

The project had scalability designed into it. Achieving certain milestones or trigger points created options for expanding the project midstream, thereby expanding the benefits of the road closure.

As a result, the project grew considerably, yet was completed on schedule on Sunday 18 December, 2022. The additions included removing 20,000m3 of spoil from an active slip above the road and making the Red River alignment permanent.
