First Sod Turned At Western Belfast Bypass

The first sod was officially turned for the Western Belfast Bypass project by The Hon. Simon Bridges, the Minister of Transport in Canterbury, New Zealand. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) awarded Fulton Hogan the NZ$88M Western Belfast Bypass project earlier this month.

The Western Belfast Bypass is a four-lane, median separated motorway providing a direct connection between the Christchurch Northern Motorway and Johns Road. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) project aims to reduce traffic by half on Main North Road and improve access between North Canterbury and the west and south of Christchurch.

As part of Christchurch’s Roads of National Significance programme, the Bypass will form part of the Christchurch Western Corridor. The project is expected to start in 2015 and completed in 2019.
