Fairton Freight Hub: Transforming Ashburton’s Freight Future

The completion of the Fairton Freight Hub marks a major milestone for Ashburton’s transport and logistics sector. For the Wareing Group and partners for Fairfield Freight Hub Ltd, Fulton Hogan delivered this large-scale design and build project has created a state-of-the-art freight facility on Works Road, supporting the region’s economic growth and supply chain resilience.

Project Delivery
Completed between May 2023 and March 2024, the project involved:

  • 50,000m³ of earthworks.
  • 34,000m² of pavements (including 18,500m² heavy duty and 14,500m² standard asphalt).
  • 2,800m² of heavy-duty concrete pads.
  • 1,150m of kerbing, 700m of drainage pipes, and a large interceptor and soakpit.
  • Water and sewer connections, 3km of ducting, and full site lighting.
  • 1km of new rail siding and a road-rail crossing upgrade.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Management
The project required careful coordination between multiple stakeholders, including Talleys, FFH, Kiwirail, Ashburton District Council, and ECan. Early and regular meetings ensured all design, environmental, and operational requirements were met, particularly around contaminated land remediation and stormwater management.

Environmental and Quality Assurance
A site-specific Environmental Management Plan and robust quality assurance processes were implemented, with regular testing and documentation. The team managed complex environmental risks, including contaminated land and stormwater, and delivered the project with zero serious harm incidents or environmental non-compliances.

Innovation and Value
The project was completed three weeks ahead of the original programme and within budget. Collaborative risk management and value engineering resulted in significant savings for the client, with all works delivered to specification and a comprehensive maintenance manual provided at handover.

A Collaborative Success
Wareing Group thanks Fairfield Freight Hub Ltd, Talleys, Kiwirail, Ashburton District Council, ECan, and all subcontractors for their partnership and support. The Fairton Freight Hub stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to quality.
