Southland road maintenance, asphalt supply, laying & traffic management
Southland is the southernmost region of New Zealand. It is a predominately rural area where agriculture sits side by side with conservation areas including the dramatically beautiful Fiordland National Park. However, the east of the region is home to the country’s largest fossil fuel deposits, in the form of lignite mined at Newvale and Ohai. Tourists share the region’s road network with hauliers carrying the produce of its farms to market, and coal transporters. These roads require constant maintenance, and as the region is so large and its terrain so rugged, it needs a sizeable, experienced road maintenance contractor. Fulton Hogan is one of the largest providers of these services in the country with the capacity to maintain Southland’s entire road network. With a project valued at $2,100,000, the Southland District Council Eastern Reseals that Fulton Hogan undertook involved approximately 50km of chip seal resurfacing throughout the Eastern area of Southland.
Reliable road maintenance, superior asphalt laying
The communities of the region, spread out across a large area, require reliable road surfaces to stay in touch with each other. From our regional base in Southland’s capital, Invercargill, Fulton Hogan provide comprehensive asphalt supply and laying services. The Invercargill Airport Apron Overlay, a project valued at $2,700,000, involved approximately 6500 tonnes of Asphalt overlay/shape correction to Invercargill’s taxiway and apron. We supply environmentally friendly asphalt, bitumen, emulsions and sealing products designed specifically for the harsh conditions prevalent in these extreme latitudes. Our asphalt laying teams use mobile mix plant to produce surfaces on site where necessary, a strategic advantage in such a wide and remote area.
Traffic management throughout Southland
In addition to maintenance of their roads, the people of Southland need a contractor who can rapidly deploy traffic control crews when there is a change to usual road conditions, caused by incidents such as traffic accidents, roadside gas or water leaks or earthquakes – this is a very seismically active area. Fulton Hogan’s extensive traffic management programmes provide motorised road marking units, pavement markers and site inspectors to ensure traffic flow is regulated. We are also experienced at management of traffic around large crowds, such as sporting occasions and civic events.
