Civil Engineering in Contracting

Civil Engineering is less about designing a concept, and more about how to bring that concept to life – because you’ll actually see what you’re working on come to life!

Our Engineers work in a fast-paced environment where no challenge is the same. They need to be dynamic to find new innovative solutions to all the problems that are thrown their way, such as: building a bridge to reduce travel times; laying asphalt on a road to improve drivers’ safety; constructing and maintaining motorways to ensure our communities can travel from A to B; or upgrading an airport runway to increase travel capacity.

Delivering these exciting projects is no small task, but the lasting legacy they leave is big and tangible.

Accounting & Finance

Our National Accounting Program will allow you to experience all facets of our business on a rotational basis as you will cover our different business streams: Construction, Infrastructure Services, Utilities, and Shared Services in New Zealand.

Working with all levels of management, you will be exposed to a wide range of accounting functions, including: commercial analysis, management accounting, financial reporting, job costings, month-end processes and internal auditing.

This will provide you with a unique range of learning and development opportunities that will help you to see the big-picture behind the numbers and understand how we build and manage critical infrastructure across New Zealand and Australia that connects communities and helps us to shape a better world.

To further your accounting qualifications, we are Charted Accountants (CA) accredited, and support graduates in their professional development.

What to expect

Our Graduate Programme is 2 years in length, and designed to assist Graduates in obtaining teachings and exposure to various facets of our business. It empowers you to take ownership of your career from day one and helps you develop the fundamental knowledge, skills and experience required to create a solid foundation for your career. Overall, the success of your programme relies on your own level of commitment, interest and drive.

The programme encompasses:

  • Summits – in person ‘summits’ where our Grads from across the country are brought together to learn new aspects as a cohort and take part in fun team activities, and of course some important socialising
  • Rotations – experience various parts of our business and ultimately suss out what you want to do longer term
  • Mentoring – with senior and experienced employees who can help guide the success of your career
  • Technical Development – registration with Engineering New Zealand or Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA ANZ), combined with a structured competency framework to help you become chartered

Development Program

If you want a career that lets you reach higher levels and achieve your ambitions, then our development programme will help get you there faster.

Our programmes are tailored to your area of specialisation (e.g. Civil Engineering, Accounting etc.), and clearly identify the skills, experience and competencies required for you to move along your career from a graduate right through to management.

As you move through this, you will be able to see the gaps you have, the learning and development opportunities to close these gaps and a clear career plan that puts you in control of your future.

Our programmes have been designed not just for Fulton Hogan, but also to align with standards used across the construction industry in New Zealand and internationally.

Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program is designed to foster the development of our Graduates by providing growth and learning opportunities to support Graduates in achieving their career goals, as well as obtaining valuable input from experienced and respected leaders in our business. Contact may be virtual or face-to-face, and formal catch-ups generally occur once a month, but may happen more frequently if required.

Professional Associations

Fulton Hogan has strong working partnerships with industry associations and support our employees joining and gaining professional registration.

Kim Buchanan

2021 Graduate Engineer

“The graduate programme has given me such a solid grounding in my career. Going through a number of rotations gave me diverse experience and helped me to find a path that I really enjoy – I’ve learnt a lot about myself on the way as well!

I found the summits particularly useful for developing my soft skills, like communication and networking. Without the summits I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to improve in this way, the skills I’ve picked up have been really useful on the job when working with my team, contractors, and clients.”

Courtney Quinn from Fulton Hogan New Zealand graduate program

Courtney Quinn

2021 Graduate Accountant

“I found out about the graduate programme while I was working for Fulton Hogan in a part time administrative role while I was studying. It’s given me the opportunity to rotate through multiple areas of the business around the country, I even got to complete a rotation in Auckland.

The programme has given me a really varied introduction to the business, which is really helpful when working for such a diverse company.”

James Wylde

2021 Graduate Accountant

“I’ve loved working on a number of different locations with great people and an awesome support system of managers and leaders behind me. I’ve heard from peers in other industries that some grad programmes can make you feel like a cog in a machine – that’s definitely not the case with this one.

The programme presents really great networking opportunities and helps you to build good, solid connections. The connections I made as a grad have helped me to secure a really exciting future role, I’m set to move over to Melbourne in November 2022 to get stuck into the Australian side of the business.”

Business Streams

Participants enter our Graduate Programme by joining one of our business streams such as Construction or Infrastructure Services.

Construction

Every day, our Construction teams are involved in building the transport infrastructure that connects and enhances the lives of communities across Aotearoa.

Our diverse teams work together to deliver complex and major projects, such as constructing highways, bridges, dams, wharves, water treatment plants and airport runways. Delivering these exciting projects is no small task, but the lasting legacy they leave is big and tangible.

As the demand for infrastructure continues to grow, there has never been a better time to be part of changing the shape of New Zealand by building landmark projects for the benefit of our communities.

Construction

Our Infrastructure Services business has a long, industry-leading history, we are involved in all stages of the process from owning and mining the rock quarries, all the way to putting that rock on the roads. Our good work does not stop there, we ensure you have safe roads, new airports and clean water.

You would of seen our Infrastructure Services team spray sealing or paving your road, or around your local area making sure other road assets are maintained to the best possible standard.

You may even travel each day on the surfacing products that have been developed by our highly-skilled, dedicated technical staff and manufactured from our network of quarries, asphalt, emulsion and PMB plants.
