Australia’s First Cold-Mix Asphalt Utilising Biofuel

Fulton Hogan’s commitment to building safe and environmentally friendly communities has led to the development of Australia’s first cold-mix asphalt that utilises renewable resources, instead of standard petroleum diesel, in all of our cold-mix and EZ Street® asphalt products throughout Australia.

Paul DeBritt, Fulton Hogan’s General Manager NSW says; “Our highest priority is building safe and environmentally friendly communities and we are committed to investing in research to help us, and our customers, achieve this goal. We commenced research for a safe, sustainable, ecofriendly substitute to diesel around 18 months ago. We trialled and assessed various imported and local fuel alternatives and after six months of rigorous trials, we had developed a cold-mix product, utilising a locally sourced biofuel.”

The key benefits of the biofuel include:

  • Much higher flash point than petroleum based diesel – so the risk of an explosion at the asphalt plant has been eliminated
  • Use and handling is safer as the products are non-hazardous
  • Improved workability and performance of the end product
  • Locally sourced and produced, supporting Australian industry and sustainable resources.

Fulton Hogan has been supplying the non-diesel based cold-mix to local government and private sector customers around Australia for 12 months. The response has been fantastic with all customers reporting improved workability and better performance, compared to standard cold-mix.

Local and state government ground staff, who previously worked with standard cold mix have also commented at the lack of odour from this next generation bio mix. Paul says; “Typically a strong, unpleasant diesel odour is present in all standard cold-mix products, however, this new ecofriendly cold-mix has no odour, making it much more pleasant for everyone to work with.”

To help make the industry safer and environmentally friendly, we urge all companies to follow suit and eliminate the use of diesel from the production of cold-mix.

Paul DeBritt says; “The day when all asphalt producers switch to biofuel will mark a turning point in Australian asphalt manufacturing. We at Fulton Hogan are proud to be leading the industry in this direction. Fulton Hogan will always put the safety of people before profit. Our next generation of ecofriendly cold-mix products are a clear example of what can be achieved when people set clear goals and never lose sight of the difficult task at hand. It took us a while to get there, but we did it – and it means safer working conditions for all involved. Considering our product is the first of its kind within the Australian asphalt manufacturing industry, Fulton Hogan welcomes contact from other industry members to discuss the product in order to improve the safety and environmental outcomes for all involved.”
